Are Cloth Napkins Worth It? Why We Use Them Every Day

I used to think cloth napkins were something you brought out when you were having people over.

Dinner parties. Holidays. Special occasions.

But over time, I've started using them much more often — even when it's just me eating at home. And I've realised that they don't need to be reserved for a special meal.

So, Are Cloth Napkins Worth It?

Technically, you can absolutely live without them.

Paper napkins do the job.

But I like the small bit of thoughtfulness that a cloth napkin brings to an everyday meal.

You put one beside your plate, and suddenly the table feels a little more finished.

It doesn't have to be fancy. It just makes the meal feel like something you're actually sitting down to enjoy.

They're Not Just for Dinner Parties

One of my favourite things about cloth napkins is that they can become part of your everyday routine.

Breakfast. Lunch. A quick dinner after work. A slow Sunday meal.

You don't need guests to use them. In fact, using them when you're eating alone is a nice reminder that everyday meals count too.

Cotton Makes Them Easy to Live With

For everyday napkins, I like natural cotton because it's comfortable, practical, and easy to care for.

Cotton is soft against your skin and can handle being washed and used repeatedly.

And unlike disposable paper napkins, a good cloth napkin isn't meant to be used once and thrown away.

You wash it, fold it, put it back in the drawer, and use it again.

That's part of the appeal.

A Small Way to Use Less

Using cloth napkins is also one small way to move away from disposable products at home.

It isn't going to change everything. But replacing something you use once with something you can wash and use again is a simple choice.

And I think that's how many of the more thoughtful changes in our homes happen — not through doing everything perfectly, but through making small choices that work for our everyday lives.

How Many Do You Actually Need?

You don't need a huge collection.

If you're a household of two, four napkins gives you a little flexibility between washes.

For a family of four, six to eight is a comfortable starting point.

If you regularly host, you might want a few more.

But there's no need to buy a dozen just because that's how napkin sets are traditionally sold.

Cloth Napkins Can Be Part of the Everyday

I think that's ultimately why I like them.

They're a small thing. They don't make a meal better. They don't make a house more beautiful on their own.

But they can add a little colour, texture, and care to something we do every day.

At 15 Arras, that's how we think about table linens in general. Not as things that need to be saved for a special occasion, but as pieces that can become part of everyday rituals.

Because maybe the everyday moments deserve a little beauty too.
