How to Wash and Care for Hand Block-Printed Cotton Table Linens

Hand block-printed cotton is made to be used, not tucked away for special occasions. Whether it’s a table runner that stays on your dining table or placemats that become part of your everyday meals, a little care helps preserve the fabric and the hand-printed designs for years.

The good news? Looking after hand block-printed cotton is simple. Here are a few easy tips to keep your table linens looking their best.

Before First Use

Like many natural cotton textiles, hand block-printed fabrics become softer with use and washing.

If you choose to wash your table linens before using them, use cold water and a mild detergent.

Washing

Hand washing is the gentlest option, but most hand block-printed cotton table linens can also be machine washed on a delicate or gentle cycle.

Use:

  • Cold or cool water
  • Mild detergent
  • Similar colours together

Avoid bleach or harsh stain removers, as these can gradually affect the printed designs.

Drying

Air drying is the best option.

Lay your linens flat or hang them to dry in the shade where possible. Prolonged direct sunlight can slowly fade colours over time.

If using a dryer, choose a low heat setting and remove the linens while they’re still slightly damp to minimise creasing.

Ironing

Cotton naturally wrinkles, especially after washing.

Iron on a medium cotton setting while the fabric is still slightly damp, or use steam for the best results.

For extra care, iron on the reverse side of the print.

Stain Tips

Everyday spills happen.

Treat stains as soon as possible by gently blotting rather than rubbing.

For most food stains, a little mild soap and cold water are enough. Avoid harsh chemicals whenever possible.

Storage

Store your table linens in a cool, dry place.

Avoid storing them while damp or in direct sunlight, and if they’re folded away for long periods, refolding them occasionally helps prevent permanent crease lines.

Will the Print Fade?

Because every piece is hand printed, slight variations are part of what makes each one unique.

With proper care, the prints will remain beautiful for many years. Like all natural textiles, they may soften and develop a gentle patina over time—a sign of a well-loved piece rather than a flaw.

Everyday Use Is the Best Use

We believe handmade pieces shouldn’t be saved only for guests or special occasions. They’re made to be enjoyed every day—whether that’s a quiet breakfast, dinner with family or coffee with friends.

With just a little care, your hand block-printed table linens can be part of those moments for years to come.
